Late 16th century; earliest use found in Arthur Golding (d. 1606), translator. From classical Latin callais greenish-blue precious stone, turquoise (Pliny), probably from an unattested Greek form *καλλαίς; compare Hellenistic Greek καλλάϊνος (also καλάϊνος) greenish-blue.
