Origin

Early 19th century; earliest use found in Lord Byron (1788–1824), poet. From modern Greek παληκάρι, παλληκάρι lad, man with youthful characteristics, brave person (Hellenistic Greek παλληκάριον (recorded in a papyrus as παλλικάριον); from παλληκ-, πάλληξ (also πάλλαξ) youth, of uncertain origin + -άριον, diminutive suffix). Compare Albanian palikar.
