Late 19th century; earliest use found in John Bagnell Bury (1861–1927), classical scholar and historian. From post-classical Latin adlection-, adlectio (also allection-, allectio) election to a particular honour or office from classical Latin allēct-, past participial stem of allegere to elect, to select, appoint + -iō.
