Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Noah Biggs (fl. 1651), medical practitioner and social reformer. From classical Latin advenīre to come (to), arrive (at), reach from ad- + venīre to come. Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French avenir, (now chiefly) advenir to happen, to be suitable or fitting, to succeed, to arrive, to come.
