Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Connop Thirlwall (1797–1875), historian and bishop of St David's. From ancient Greek πενέστης member of the serf class in ancient Thessaly, considered by ancient writers to be from the same base as πένης labourer, poor man, πένεσθαι to labour, but perhaps rather originally the name of a people.
