Origin

Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Blount (1618–1679), antiquary and lexicographer. From French rédhibition and its etymon classical Latin redhibitiōn-, redhibitiō return (of an article) to the vendor from redhibit-, past participial stem of redhibēre to take back or give back + -iō.
