  • (A) A Persian silver coin (originally weighing 4.5 grams, 69 grains) and later reduced to 2.3 grams, 35 grains), equivalent in value to two shahis, and first issued by the Safavid Shah Muhammad Khudabanda (reigned 1578–88), continuing in circulation until the late 18th cent.; a money of account derived from this. (b) Any of a number of Indian coins whose issue was initiated by a ruler called Mahmud, such as the gold mahmudi (weighing 11.5 grams, 177 grains) of Mahmud I (1458–1511), sultan of Gujarat.

Early 17th century; earliest use found in Robert Coverte (fl. 1608–1615). Conflation of Persian muhammadi and mahmudi.
