Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Robert Hunt (1807–1887), chemist and photographer. From Cornish sâwn cleft, fissure, ravine, cove, cognate with Welsh safn mouth, jaws, palate, Middle Breton staffn (Breton staoñ palate), probably ultimately from the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek στόμα mouth.
